Gluten-free products are all over the market these days. While it may seem like just the latest fad, there are people with celiac disease or a wheat allergy who cannot have any gluten at all. Then there are some people, whether due to a gluten intolerance or just personal experience, find that they just feel better on a gluten-free diet.

"
For people without celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, going gluten-free helps them feel better because they’re adding in whole vegetables, whole fruits, whole grains, and “real” food instead of relying on highly processed food products that happen to contain gluten, like bread, cookies, cakes and crackers made from refined wheat flour," explains Jessica Shea Lehmann, MS RDN.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. This means it is found foods that contain any product from these grains, including soy sauce and beer. Of course, the largest category is baked goods. As Jessica states, "just switching from a highly processed cookie made from wheat flour to a gluten-free version of the highly processed cookie is not going to improve health." However, sometimes you just want a cookie that tastes like the ones you remember. So, we had our taste testers try a number of gluten-free products and the following are their favorites.

Blends by Orly Gluten-Free Flour
$10

It was so easy to recreate regular recipes since you replace regular flour cup for cup. I made brownies and baked donut holes that tasted just like regular ones and I didn't have to play around with the ingredients at all.

BFree Wheat and Gluten Free Breads and Wraps
$5 to $7

Overall, the entire BFree GF product line is delicious and has the texture and consistency of wheat-based bread. I'm impressed that they are able to replicate real bread without additives or loads of fat so typically added to GF products to enhance the taste. Many GF products are so high in fat calories that it is unhealthy to eat them. These all come in at 60-120 calories per slice with no added sugar, which is impressive.

Trader Joe's Gluten-Free Cupcakes
$4

These are perfect for those times when you're craving a sweet treat. Trader Joe's Gluten Free Cupcakes really hit the spot with a moist cake and a delicious frosting.
