You started your career in Hollywood but have now succeeded in the beauty industry. What made you decide to leave and start your company? Was that something you had always planned on doing?

My transition from acting to the beauty industry was driven by my own personal journey with skincare. After spending years under heavy makeup and intense lighting on set, my skin suffered. I tried all the latest and greatest things and consulted many dermatologists, but nothing worked. This is when I rediscovered my grandmother’s Asian beauty rituals, which healed my skin and inspired me to start my first brand pūrlisse beauty. Starting a beauty company wasn't something I had always planned, but my experiences led me to this path, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to help others through my products.

Have you always had an interest in beauty products?

I've always been fascinated by beauty and skincare, especially from a holistic and natural perspective. Growing up, I was surrounded by traditional Asian beauty rituals, which emphasized the importance of caring for the skin from the inside out. This early exposure deeply influenced my approach to creating products that blend modern science with time-tested ingredients.

Acting will always hold a special place in my heart. It was a creative and challenging experience that taught me a lot about resilience and expression. While I do miss certain aspects of it, I'm incredibly fulfilled by the work I do now in the beauty industry. Transitioning to the beauty industry has given me a new platform to tell stories, this time through the lens of skincare and beauty. It's a different kind of storytelling, where I can empower people to feel confident in their own skin and amplify Asian voices and perspectives, which is deeply meaningful to me.

How do you manage and balance the demands of running multiple successful beauty brands with parenthood?

Balancing the demands of motherhood and leading three brands is challenging but incredibly rewarding. My daughter is a constant reminder of why I strive to break barriers, not only as a businesswoman but also as an Asian woman in a field that often lacks representation. As a founder, it’s hard to break away from work so I involve my daughter as much as I can to spend more time with her. For example, she will attend beauty and influencer events and I bring her to group dinners whenever I can. This approach allows me to lead by example and I hope to foster a strong work ethic in my daughter.

What has been the most rewarding part of your entrepreneurial journey with Yensa, JooY, and pūrlisse?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey has been the ability to share and celebrate my Asian heritage through our products. It's incredibly fulfilling to hear from customers who have regained confidence because of our skincare and beauty products. Knowing that we've positively impacted people's lives is truly gratifying. Additionally, building a supportive and passionate team that shares my vision has been a tremendous joy. Together, we've created a space that not only enhances beauty but also honors and celebrates Asian culture.

Can you share any advice for aspiring entrepreneurs looking to start their own business?

My advice for aspiring entrepreneurs is to stay true to your vision and be resilient. The journey is full of ups and downs, but staying focused and adaptable is crucial. Surround yourself with a supportive network and don't be afraid to take risks. As both a woman and an Asian woman, I've faced unique challenges, but these experiences have made me more resilient and determined. It's important to stay authentic and be open to learning. Breaking glass ceilings isn't just about personal success; it's about creating opportunities and paving the way for others who follow.

How do you foresee the future of the beauty industry?

The beauty industry is moving towards greater inclusivity, authenticity, and sustainability. As consumers become more informed, there's a growing demand for products that are transparent and ethical. I see a future where beauty brands are not just about aesthetics but also about values, celebrating diversity, and empowering individuals.

What is a favorite childhood memory that you think shaped who you are today?

One of my favorite childhood memories is spending time in the kitchen with my grandmother, learning about traditional Chinese herbs and their healing properties. Those moments sparked my interest in natural ingredients and holistic wellness, which have become foundational elements in my brands today.

Her wisdom and teachings have shaped not only my approach to beauty but also my values and dedication to creating products that nurture both the skin and the soul.
