15 Safety Tips to Keep in Mind

With the recent attacks on Asians, especially Asian women in big cities like NYC, we've compiled a list of safety tips. You probably know these tips already, but sometimes we forget and let our guards down because we feel comfortable. Unfortunately, we need to be alert as if our lives depend on it.

1) Stay off your phone. It's easy to get distracted and you end up being more of a target when you aren't aware of your surroundings.

2) Try to walk only on well-traveled and well-lit routes. And walk confidently like you know where you're going.

3) Use windows as mirrors to see who is behind you. Or pretend to take a selfie.

4) Always get your keys out before leaving the car or public transportation. This is so that you can get into your home more quickly, but also to use as a weapon. You can swing them from your key chain or lanyard like a mace or nunchuck. If you're holding them in your hand, do so with the key sticking down by your pinky for a better stabbing motion.

5) Stay near the wall or the in the middle of the platform away from an incoming train. If you are in NYC, look for the black and white striped board hanging towards the middle of the platform. This is where the conductor car will stop.

6) Don't go home if you feel that a stranger is following you. Instead, go into a nearby store and chat with the workers.

7) Use the camera on your phone if you feel unsafe or that you might be attacked. This can serve to identify your attacker if it comes down to that.

8) Travel with a friend when you can, especially at night.

9) Use caution in public restrooms. Be aware of the people around you.

10) Do not engage with someone who seems unstable.

11) Never go to a second location when someone forces you to.

12) Trust your instincts if something feels off. Do not worry about "offending someone." Get off the train, move away, leave.

13) Always walk on the side of the road that opposes traffic and stay away from the side of the road. It's harder for the driver to grab you and you can see cars coming.

14) Park your car in a garage or on a well-lit street. Lock your car immediately after you get in, even before putting your seat belt on.

15) Consider getting a personal safety device. This can be pepper spray or a safety alarm. However, make sure you learn how to use them properly.
